Sarracenia ‘Redbug’ is an amazingly vigorous Larry Mellichamp hybrid…a forced wedding of first cousins Sarracenia rubra ssp. rubra and Sarracenia alabamensis ssp. wherryi. Â Yes, that was still legal in Charlotte, NC, when the act was consummated. The dense 1′ tall x 22″ wide clumps are composed of up to 180 pitchers at once…yes, we counted. Â The 1′ tall pitchers are green at the base, but heavily infused with red toward and including the hood. Â In late April (NC), the clumps are topped with propeller-like flowers with blood red petals, contrasting with a bright green seed-collecting plate. Â
