Sabal palmetto Mocksville
Thanks to hardy palm grower Larry Green for sharing seed from the Sabal palmetto growing at his former family home in Mocksville, NC (1 hour southwest of Winston-Salem). Larry tells us this Sabal palmetto was planted around 1980, and survived the mega-death winter of 1984/85 in NC. Larry’s palm was grown from seed he collected years earlier from a Sabal palmetto at a motel in Fayetteville, NC, which also still survives. The broad fronds are less divided than some Sabal palmettos, and Larry tells us that Sabal palmetto ‘Mocksville’ begins flowering at a very young age. If you’re interested in this hardier form of the normally unreliable Sabal palmetto, don’t miss this special opportunity.
