Mangave Whale Tale PP 31060
This large growing xmangave hybrid from the amazing Walters Gardens breeding program in 2018 is a cross involving three North American natives, Agave ovatifolia, Agave gypsophila ssp. pablocarrilloi, and Manfreda maculosa. The resulting specimen is a stunning 1′ tall x 4′ wide clump of silver grey foliage, covered with thousands of small burgundy spots. The deeply channeled leaves spread outward, forming a large, architectural specimen. Mangave ‘Whale Tale’ produces only sparse offsets, and should flower around year three with a 7′ tall stalk of bright yellow, tubular flowers. We’ve had sister seedlings to Mangave ‘Whale Tale’ winter hardy in the garden since 2014, with a winter low of 7 degrees F.
