Mangave Bad Hair Day PP 29313
And now for something completely different…if hybrids of manfreda and agave aren’t enough. xMangave ‘Bad Hair Day’ is a fascinating 2017 release from a cross of the pencil-leaf Agave geminiflora and Manfreda maculosa. The resulting solitary 10″ tall x 30″ wide clump is composed of narrow 1/4″ wide, spineless, soft, rubbery leaves. The green leaves, complete with a heavy overlay of burgundy spots, form a symmetrical rosette except for the occasional leaf that refuses to lay flat, instead twirling aimlessly in seemingly random directions. You’ll quickly see why the name fits so well. Since we can’t overwinter Agave geminiflora, we assumed this wouldn’t be winter hardy, but have been shocked after three years in the ground including no protection at 7 degrees F. Whether in a container or in the rock garden, xMangave ‘Bad Hair Day’ is truly unique.
