Iris tectorum Wolong
This 2010 American Iris Society Award of Merit winning clone of the easy-to-grow Chinese roof iris is from a 1989 Jim Waddick collection near Wolong in Sichuan, China. It was also awarded the prestigious SIGNA (Species Iris Group) Award in 2013. For us, this is one of the most vigorous clones of the Chinese roof iris we grow, although it forms a tighter clump and doesn’t spread like the forms more common in the trade. Starting in mid-April (NC), the 20″ tall x 2′ wide clumps of soft, lush green foliage are topped with stalks of rich lavender flowers, each highlighted with small darker purple flecks…a hummingbird treat.
