Dryopteris pulcherrima
Dryopteris pulcherrima is a Himalayan native fern that can be found growing in moist valleys at 5,000′-7,000′ elevation from Tibet east to central China. Surprisingly, however, it has thrived in heat tolerance trials as far south as central Texas. Dryopteris pulcherrima is a beautiful fern, as the name implies (the Latin word pulcherrima means beautiful). Resembling a slightly lacier version of Dryopteris marginalis, Dryopteris pulcherrima forms an 18″ tall x 2′ wide evergreen specimen in the woodland garden. A rich, moist, compost-laden soil grows the best specimens.
