Aucuba japonica Shugetsu
Aucuba japonica ‘Shugetsu’ (translated as ‘New Year’) is one of the most unusual Japanese aucuba selections we’ve grown. Almost certainly a tetraploid, Aucuba ‘Shugetsu’ shares many traits with tet daylilies…abnormally thick stems and foliage. The tree trunk-like stalk supports a 6′ tall, vase-shape plant that’s narrow at the base and widens slightly toward the tip. The 9″ long evergreen leaves are very dark green with a wide golden central pattern and abnormally large for an aucuba…truly striking!
