Allium speculae Walton
Allium speculae, aka Flatrock onion, is one of our favorite native alliums, found only in five counties in Northern Georgia and Alabama, where it resides on moist granite (Lithonia Gneiss) outcrops. The rare Allium speculae has performed great for us in the sunny rock garden in a pH above 6.0, producing a tight, 8″ tall, summer-dormant clump of narrow, glossy green foliage that’s topped for us, starting in early May with hundreds of pale pink flowers, which age to white. You’ll love this ornamental native onion! Flowering-sized bulbs aren’t much larger than sand grains, so use care when planting. Our offering is propagated from plants shared from the Walton County Georgia population…no relation to John Boy’s family.
