Yucca filifera
I first saw Yucca filifera growing on my 1994 trip to Mexico, where I became determined to grow this beauty. We have now had the deer-resistant Y. filifera survive in the ground to 8 degrees F with no damage, although much of the written information touts it as being more tender. The stout leaves, 1.5″ wide and 18″ long, are arranged around the 5′ tall trunk, giving the appearance of a narrow-leaf Yucca aloifolia. Unlike most other yuccas, flowering occurs on a 5′ long weeping panicle of white bells…obviously embarrassed at the idea of mating with another yucca.
